Do I really need a specialist accountant as a jockey?

A general accountant can file a return, but riding income is unusual — ride fees, retainers, prize money, sponsorship and seasonal cash flow, plus reliefs written specifically for athletes. We work with these every day, which is how we routinely recover tax that others miss.

What is Sportsperson Tax Relief and do I qualify?

Accepted Answer

It's a Revenue relief that lets qualifying athletes reclaim tax on a portion of career earnings, recognising that sporting careers peak early and end young. Many jockeys are eligible and never claim it. We assess eligibility and can review up to ten years retrospectively.

Can you handle bloodstock and breeding activity too?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Bloodstock has its own VAT and structuring rules — trading, stallion shares and nominations, syndicates and sales at home and abroad. It's a core part of what we do alongside riders and yards.

I've fallen behind on returns. Is that a problem?

Accepted Answer

It's common and it's fixable. We'll bring your filings up to date, deal directly with Revenue on your behalf, and put a simple system in place so it doesn't happen again. The sooner we start, the smaller the issue.

Where are you based and do I have to come in?

We're based in Clonmel and look after clients across the country. Most of the work happens by phone, email and secure document upload — you only come in if you want to.
